Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side as a child due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through the medium of art. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of an individual member of the Jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an intern at a small studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
